This is not the first time Whatsapp has made announcement about stopping support for BlackBerry and Symbian devices. They've always been extending it though. With this report of ending support on these devices, this has made a lot of blackberry users dump their device for a better OS platform. Actually this is not the first time Whatsapp will be extending their support for BlackBerry devices. Who knows, they might still extend it till next year.
There is currently an update confirming the extension and this has already been rolling out for WhatsApp for BlackkBerry 10 which confirms it officially extending the support as the log notes changed, Read ‘client end-of-life date to December 31, 2017’.

Also, S40 users have also been given more time and have had their end date extended as well. But S60 ends June 30th.
